In
planning the new Island Dolphin Care Center, Deena, the rest
of the staff, and I envisioned
an inviting, educational marine showcase as an extension to our
existing Marine Science Education Program. Once again, I believe
we have truly accomplished and exceeded our mission. The aquariums,
displays, and interactive games in the Fonzitorium complemented
our little touchtank. Since the opening of the Center in March
2005, the Marine Education Program has welcomed close to two
thousand visitors through the Therapy Programs, School Field
Trips, and
Public Education. Yet, as the education program has grown our
touchtank has remained the same quaint aquarium originally
designed for small
groups.
Deena, Peter, the rest of
the staff and I knew something needed to be done.
One
of the things I have learned in working at Island Dolphin Care
is when something needs to be done for the good of the
children; Deena finds a way to make it happen!
Thanks to the generous contribution of the Ocean Fund,
IDC is building a new Fonzie’s Backyard touchtank! It is very exciting.
The new touchtank is designed to allow many more individuals
to participate at one time. Naturally
the touchtank is handicapped accessible and kid friendly. It will house
all the same fun animals, plus allow room for new additions.
It was a bitter sweet moment in tearing down our old Fonzie’s
Backyard. Images of children laughing at squirmy brittlestars and kissing
gooey sea
cucumbers kept flashing trough my head. But I realized that soon I would
be able to see
even more children of all ages, having fun and learning about the wonderful
creatures of our oceans at our new beautiful touchtank.
I hope to see you all very
soon so I can show off our wonderful remodeled Fonzie’s
Backyard!

Dear Island Dolphin Care
Center,
I can not express my gratitude enough for the wonderful field trip
the Key Largo School's third grade classes had in May. Your facility
did an amazing job. The staff kept the students' interest and also
the teachers and parents.
I have gone on many field trips and this was by far the most educational
and organized trip I have been on. The information given to the
students was incredible and fun. I came away with a great deal
more knowledge than I had before I cam in the door.
The Florida Keys is truly lucky to have such a facility in our
own backyard that teaches our children about our very special marine
environment. They got to hunt for answers in a scavenger hunt,
touch some of the marine life, learn in a fin way all about dolphins
and fish and even get a little artsy in the process.
I realized that the educational end of providing a field trip/learning
experience is just part of what you do at the Island Dolphin Care
Center. While we were there, I also saw a couple of your special
children interacting with the dolphins. The service you give to
those children and adults with special needs is not only touching,
but so needed to bring a little joy and support to those families.
The smile on the one little girl was priceless.
I hope that our community becomes more aware of the service you
provide to our students and to those of special needs. Thanks again
for one incredible day.
Sincerely,
Debbie |
